An early Broadface Kachina crafted by the renowned Hopi carver Kevin Pochoema. The Kachina doll carries a bow in one hand and yucca whips in the other, attired in traditional white kilt and sash with a fox tail at the back. A Kiva in the sky symbol graces the side of the base. Every intricate detail of this piece is skillfully hand carved from cottonwood, and hand painted to finish. The bottom is marked with "Kevin Pochoema, Bacavi, 4-9-86".
According to Barton Wright’s book "Kachinas: A Hopi Artist’s Documentary", Wuyak-kuita has assumed various forms over time. These Kachinas serve as guards during ceremonies, preventing any transgressions on the Kachina's path. Traditionally, they were used to enforce community tasks like cleaning springs. Wuyak-kuita, belonging to this category, is often seen at the rear of the Bean Dance Procession or circling wide at the sides. He approaches clowns during ceremonies, filling them with awe. On Third Mesa, Wuyak-kuita Kachinas guard the kivas to keep He’-e’-e from approaching too close during the Palolokong Ceremony or from going to the Flute Spring during the same ceremony.
