ANNE JOHNSON CUMMINGS

Anne's involvement in the arts has been a lifelong pursuit, beginning with Saturday morning art classes at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio as a child, strolling the galleries mesmerized by the rich visual display of the world of art history. After high school, Anne pursued a joint Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art and art history, with a certificate in Asian Studies, from Ohio University and later did graduate work in history and art history at the University of Toledo and Ohio State University. She traveled to Europe during these years, fulfilling a dream of viewing the masterpieces of art she had studied, and gathering inspiration for her own art-work.

Anne has worked professionally in the arts in many capacities. She has been a business owner, exhibition coordinator and designer, museum store manager, artists' representative, graphic artist, grants writer, member of a fiber artists' cooperative, and art consultant. Whatever it took to keep her hands in the world of art!

Anne has also been an art educator in many venues for the past 25 years. She has taught art at the Toledo Museum of Art, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Dairy Barn Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center, UM Church Street Center, through numerous artist-in-residence programs and her own art program called "After School Art," which offered classes in West-ford to children and adults. She is currently an art teacher at Colchester High School.

Works by Anne and Athens Tapestry Works, a fiber artists' cooperative, are in public and private collections in Ohio, including the State Office Tower and Nationwide Insurance corporate offices. Anne's first solo exhibition of her work.

When the demands of teaching and family allow, Anne pursues interests in outdoor activities, such as running, XC skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, kayaking, and gardening. Much of the inspiration for her work comes from her close connection to the natural world around her. Anne believes passionately that humans must learn to be Leavers and not always Takers in their relationship with our planet. Anne tries to convey her convictions in her artwork through the use of reused and recycled materials and by presenting the viewer with ways of looking at the world more intimately. Anne's current work explores issues of aging, memories, disappearing rural views, and relationships. less
