Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) displayed many of his most ambitious portraits at the enormously popular public exhibitions hosted annually by London’s Royal Academy. In the foreground is Reyniolds with his right hand held high and ear trumpet in his left hand; beside the Prince of Wales in a red coat holding a copy of the exhibition catalogue. The setting is Somerset House.
This engraved view of the exhibition of 1787, Reynolds’s portrait of the Prince of Wales with a servant may be seen at the very center of the far wall. All the paintings in the room are identified in the catalogue. less
