Hand-crafted in India, crafted at a very large scale with turned finials, hinged panel top with heavy chain top closure, and large open interior. Many of these included secret compartments for valuables by tradition! This one features paneled sides with iron strapwork and squared decorative elements. Used for collecting and storing a young bride’s most precious silks, strongboxes such as this trace their origins to those created for the British East India Company which melded classic English design with Indian craftsmanship and embellishment. Wonderfully aged patina. Measures 69.5L" x 32"W x 39.5"H.
