HUBERT PETITOT & JEAN GAUTHIER

A nice pair of French art deco double wall sconces in nickel plated copper alloy (bronze or solid brass). Made around 1935-1940. They hold nice cups in clear frosted pressed glass. These shades were made by the glass manufactory EJG-Ezan. This model cup is never signed. The bronze arms are signed 'Petitot'. The bronze maker Alexandre Petitot started his company in 1878. His son Alexandre Hubert took over around 1917. The Paris based company of Petitot was a wholesale selling its lamps to lighting shops all over France. Petitot produced precious fixtures in high quality bronze with shades by the best French glass manufacturers.
The wall lights are 30,3 cm high (11,93 inches) and 42 cm (16,54") long. They are 22 cm (9,66") deep. The shades have a diameter of 18,5 cm (7,28"). The sconces are in very good condition. I re-nickeled the heavy mounts. The fixtures are rewired with American candelabra base sockets.
EZAN
Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in moulded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
