Unusual wrought iron pestle, most are bronze like most mortars. This one is at least 17th century, quite possibly dating to the Gothic period. I have owned two iron mortars in my time and both were 16th century. This pestle is likely Northern European, though hard to say definitively which country it originates from. Simply wrought, it's weight must have made it quite effective at crushing and mixing. One end, a bit larger, is clearly the 'handle', the other quite smooth and polished from use. A grand piece of utilitarian history.
I purchased it many years ago from Frances Pratt, collector of early European antiques and works of art, mostly Spanish and Italian. I was hoping I would find a mate for it someday, but I am now downsizing. I pass the baton (pestle) on to you.
8.5 inches by 2 in diameter.
