HENRI MOUYNET & NOVERDY
A large French art deco chandelier in nickel plated solid brass or bronze by Henri Mouynet made around 1928-1933.
The large mounting holds a 14,5 inches wide bowl and nine panels by Noverdy. Done in clear frosted molded-pressed glass. Both mount and shades are decorated with grape leaves and bunches of grapes. The bronze mount is marked MM on the inside: the usual foundry marks of la maison Mouynet. All ten shades are signed Noverdy France. The chandelier is 34.65 inches high and 23,6" in diameter. It is in excellent condition. The bowl has numerous unimportant tiny chips on the rim hidden by the metal mounting. I re-nickeled and patinated the mount. And the chandelier is rewired with nine American candelabra base sockets.

Henri Mouynet took over the business of his father Marcel Mouynet. Henri was a producer of bronze and forged iron lighting fixtures. He had a large company in Paris working mainly in a neo-classical style but he made lamps sconces and chandeliers in modern (art déco) style as well. In 1926 he built a huge building at 11 rue Etienne Marcel prolongée (nowadays named Roger Verlomme street). After the crisis he was forced to sell it. H. Markhbeinn who had a business importing and distributing Bohemian glasses from Eastern Europe bought the place in 1937.
For his fixtures Mouynet mainly used shades in pressed glass made by Cristalleries de Verdun. But several models with shades by Degué and Noverdy are known as well. Mouynet had a few shades exclusively designed and made for him on command by the glass factories of Charles Schneider and Degué.

NOVERDY - Verrerie des Vosges : René & Jean Drouhot.
In 1924 the businessmen from Dijon father and son Jean and René Drouhot purchased Verrerie des Vosges. A glass factory in the Moselle based villages of Hoffmuhl and Lutzelbourg. In 1925 Jean and René Drouot also took over the société anonyme des Verreries de Dijon. Which was a glass factory founded in 1893 producing tableware. They renamed it Nouvelle Verrerie de Dijon. The lamp shades that were produced in their plants are often unsigned. Sometimes signed Noverdy (for Nouvelle Verrerie de Dijon). And a few models were signed Verrerie des Vosges. Sometimes we can see the signature Noverdi on acid-engraved bowls or vases. In 1928 a certain monsieur Jean Noverdy won a price at an exhibition. The home address of this price winning fantasy figure was the house of Jean Drouhot. For the rest there is not one file or register where the name (Jean) Noverdy shows up.
