Text in French.
Jean-Charles Moreux (1889 7 July 1956) was a French architect, and a representative of a rigorous and poetic classicism. Many of Moreux's designs were in Paris, including the avenue Marigny, hôtel particulier for baron Robert Rothschild; the Hôtel particulier for Bernard Reichenbach, rue Alfred-Dehodencq; the jardins des Gobelins (square René-Le Gall); the pavillon de la Martinique, île des Cygnes, for the "exposition internationnale des arts et des techniques dans la vie moderne", and at the Louvre, rearrangement of the salle Rubens. Graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1922. Friend of Jean Lurçat , he worked for the couturier Jacques Doucet , Baron Robert de Rothschild and Viscount Charles de Noailles
Jean-Charles Moreux was a prominent French architect and interior designer who lived from 1889 to 1956. He was known for his eclectic approach to design, which incorporated elements of Art Deco, neoclassicism, and modernism.
Moreux designed a wide variety of buildings and interiors, including private residences, public buildings, and commercial spaces. He also worked on several notable restoration projects, including the Palace of Versailles and the Château de Fontainebleau.
In addition to his architectural work, Moreux was an accomplished furniture and product designer. He collaborated with many prominent designers and manufacturers, including the French glassmaker Lalique.
French architect and designer Jean-Charles Moreux was born in 1889 at the Chateau de Joncy in Saone-et-Loire. He studied at l’Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris (1914-22) where he spent the period during World War I working on the preservation of works of art. While attending l’Ecole he became friends with the architect Jean Lurcat and his brothers, Andre and Paul Vera.
In 1924 he exhibited his first pieces of furniture at the Salon d’Automne. He had a preference for poetic living spaces and felt that people deserved better than Corbusier’s “machines for living in”. He was anxious to introduce aspects of the marvelous into architecture and living spaces. His creations drew upon the classical, baroque, and rococo styles.
Moreux’s well-known clients included the Baron Robert de Rothschild and Bolette Natanson. He also designed interiors for the fashion designer Raphael, the Princess of Polignac and the novelist Colette.
