From the early Middle Ages onwards household pottery was made in the villages of Bouffioulx and Châtelet near the outskirts of the city of Charleroi. Due to the industrialization in the 19th century the activity and skills languished. When in 1907 the painter Willem Delsaux (1862-1945) came to live in Bouffioulx he got intrigued by the old tradition of the place and he took up pottery. Delsaux hired the most talented sons of local potters. Amongst them Edgard Aubry and Roger Guérin. Aubry soon left Delsaux and started to work for himself. He became the most important Belgian potter of the first half of the 20th century. Roger Guérin married the daughter of Delsaux and took over the company in 1918 when Delsaux left Bouffioulx and took up painting again. Where Guérin industrialized his production and had a staff of 40 people working for him Aubry worked alone and produced art pottery. The successful show at the 1925 "Exposition des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes" in Paris made him a famous and recognized potter.
