- The bed frame is over 100 years old and has wear and tear consistent with its age and history. It … moreThe bed frame is over 100 years old and has wear and tear consistent with its age and history. It is solidly built and has many more years to go. It appears that some refinishing has taken place over its lifetime. Please see the photos to see the wear, scrapes and dents on the frame. Most of the more noticeable wear is on the sideboards. The frame could be easily refinished again or used as is as the wear does not detract from the piece and rather distinguishes it from the flimsier and less elegant modern copies. The bed slats are not original, but rather are newer cut to size 2 x 1.5 pieces of wood that when placed in the location designated on them, fit perfectly and firmly hold the box frame in place. Note that the antique shop we bought the frame from in 1989, Midland Hall Antiques and Interiors in Southern Pines, NC, indicated that the bed was circa 1890 and is mahogany. We cannot independently confirm either fact, but believe them to be true. less
