The book, properly titled "Tracing the Figure" details DeKooning's evolution as he pursues his obsession with the female figure starting with a realist rendering of his wife in 1933 and ending with pure abstract expressionism on an artistic journey of 78 works that culminates in his famed series of the "Woman Paintings. Using a wide variety of mediums, including charcoal, graphite, water colors, pastels and oils, the works are a vibrant and colorful collection, many of which were mounted on board and other backings for exhibition, the collection rivals the full scale paintings in their impact.
