The centerpiece of our English papier mache tray table is a basket of flowers resting on a pedestal, hand painted in exceptional detail. The scene comes to life against a warm apple green background. The tray’s angled sides are finished with a classic English japanning technique – the English emulated the lacquer techniques of Japanese artists – in this case the black lacquer finish is exquisitely decorated with gilded flowers, foliage and butterflies. Delicate veins, petals and stamens are etched on the surface of the gold leaf. The gilding is consistent with the style of Henry Clay. His renowned establishment, Clay & Company, which operated from 1770-1860, significantly influenced the papier mache and japanning industry. Noteworthy among their achievements was a patent for Clay’s heat resistant paper panels suitable for lacquering.
The tray sits on a later regency style wood base with faux bamboo legs and a cross stretcher.
A piece of remarkable artistry while remaining highly functional.
