Description: 19th century, England, a lovely quality and highly decorative Victorian coal scuttle made in brass sheet metal with an interior … more 19th century, England, a lovely quality and highly decorative Victorian coal scuttle made in brass sheet metal with an interior metal lining. The exterior is decorated in relief with putti, flowers, and cartouches, on paw feet. The movable handle is studded.

A coal scuttle, sometimes spelled coalscuttle and also called a hod, "coal bucket", or "coal pail", is a bucket-like container for holding a small, intermediate supply of coal convenient to an indoor coal-fired stove or heater. Such items were commonplace in British and Irish homes and most were quite utilitarian looking. The more decorative versions, such as in this listing, were typically used in the finer homes and stately manors.
