This Alex Katz rare vintage 1979 first edition hand signed lithograph print landmark volume large hardcover collector's Pop Art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with mustard yellow linen covered boards, embossed cover and spine titles, and dust jacket is published by Harry N. Abrams Inc. Publishers New York, printed in Japan in 1979. It is hand signed by the artist on the top right of the inside front title page. It features an expansive monograph survey of the artworks of the artist Alex Katz, with accompanied compelling text authored by art historian and critic Irving Sandler.
Alex Katz ( B. 1927 ) is an American Modernist artist of a Jewish background born in Brooklyn New York. Katz is one of the most recognized and widely exhibited artists of his generation. Often associated with The Pop Art Movement, he began exhibiting his work in 1954, and since that time has produced a celebrated body of work with expressive power that includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints.
His earliest work took inspiration from various aspects of Mid-Century American culture and society, and over the past five decades he has established himself as a preeminent painter of Modern life. The distinctive poetic portraits and lyrical landscapes bear a flattened surface and economy of line. He uses characteristically wide brushstrokes, large swathes of color, and refined compositions creating a new and distinctive type of Realism in American Art that evokes a cool but seductive emotional response.
Since the 1950's Alex Katz's work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions around the world. Artworks by Katz can be found in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
This landmark volume is the first comprehensive study of Katz's innovative work that has made an indelible mark on the history of American Art. The book is abundantly illustrated with 220 beautiful reproductions of paintings, drawings, collages, and cutouts, 72 hand tipped lithograph print full-color plates, including 12 fold out illustrations, many published here for the first time.
The importance of this volume is further enhanced by numerous photographs of the artist, his family and friends, a chronology, bibliography, and list of exhibitions. Author Irving Sandler's provocative essay not only chronicles Katz's artistic development, but also offers rich insights into his intentions and achievements as one of the most vital pioneering artists since The Early Nineteen Sixties.
The rare out of print 1st edition large format hardcover collector's art book measures 11 3/4" W X 11" H X 1 1/2" D, with 222 pages. It is printed on premium paper stock.
