Incredible green and amber/gold pair of square shaped sommerso bowls (also known as caviar bowls) with eight facets attributed to Flavio Poli a murano glass artist. These are substantial bowls, each weighing more than 6 lbs and meansuring 7 inches across by 3 inches tall. The bowl area is 4.5 inches across. The bowls could be used decoratively or as serving pieces.
While unmarked, I have seen another identical bowl with the same weight and measurements with a foil label 'Paul's Products established in 1888, made in Italy'. According to internet sources, the company begin importing from Italy in the mid 1950's.
Flavio Poli (1900-1984) was an Italian artist, known for his designs in glass. He was trained at the Istituto d'Arte di Venezia, then began work as a ceramicist. He was appointed artistic director of Barovier, Seguso & Ferro (later Seguso Vetri d’Arte) in 1934, where he devised a style of 'submerged' glass, with several transparent layers, one over the other. A number of his works are in the Murano Glass Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, and MoMA in New York. less
