EDGARD AUBRY and FERNAND CARION

A large art deco vase in stoneware made by Edgard Aubry the famous art potter from Châtelet Belgium. With a beautiful wrought iron mounting made by the Brussels based blacksmith Fernand Carion. Carion ordered vases from famous potters like Roger Guérin and Edgard Aubry encased them in his wrought iron mounts and sold them to his clientele in Belgium and abroad, Those pieces he signed with the usual F.Carion stamp. The other way around Guérin and Aubry also ordered mounts from Carion for their vases. These vases have unsigned iron mounts made by Carion. And were sold by the potters through their own network.
The vase on offer is in excellent condition. With a stunning salt drip glaze in earth toned and blue enamel. Light blue is a colour rarely used by Aubry. The Carion mount is unsigned. The vase is signed E.Aubry with the signature used between 1922 and 1929.
It is 19,5 inches (49,5 cm) high and 10,43 inches wide (26,5 cm). The vase was made around 1925. Large sized Aubry-Carion vases are a hard find. And they make high prices. f.i. Christie's sold one in 2002 for some 6500 dollars. I like the shape and glaze of mine better though.

From the early Middle Ages onwards household pottery was made in the villages of Bouffioulx and Châtelet near the outskirts of the city of Charleroi. Due to the industrialization in the 19th century the activity and skills languished. When in 1907 the painter Willem Delsaux (1862-1945) came to live in Bouffioulx he got intrigued by the old tradition of the place and he took up pottery. Delsaux hired the most talented sons of local potters. Amongst them Edgard Aubry and Roger Guérin. Aubry soon left Delsaux and started to work for himself. He became the most important Belgian potter of the first half of the 20th century. Roger Guérin married the daughter of Delsaux and took over the company in 1918 when Delsaux left Bouffioulx and took up painting again. Where Guérin industrialized his production and had a staff of 40 people working for him Aubry worked alone and produced studio pottery. The successful show at the 1925 "Exposition des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes" in Paris made him a famous and recognized potter.
