BIO
TONY MAGAR
Born in London in 1936, Tony Magar studied at the Royal Albert School of Speech and Literature.
A restless inventor and explorer of new artistic forms, Tony Magar is a painter who has been at the forefront of the avant-garde art world for more than half a century. Moving from London to New York in the early 1960s, when the Abstract Expressionist movement was at its height, Magar worked with artists such as Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, and Willem de Kooning. He co-founded the influential Park Place Gallery in New York’s SoHo, which would become a major focal point of the downtown art scene. Magar’s own work is characterized by rich textural fields of background color which ooze and trickle into one another. Overpainted with delicate swirls of loose, flowing lines, these are imbued with a sense of spontaneity and vibrant kinetic energy; the artist appears to be influenced as much by the music of John Coltrane and Wagner as by his fellow painters. less
