High end down filled sofa made by stickley for the colonial williamsburg collection. This reproduction has elegant proportions and french-inspired lines. Rococo carved scrolls and acanthus leaves combine with serpentine curves, cabriole legs and ball and claw feet derived from an original design of a dragon clutching a pearl. Tradition suggests that the original english serpentine sofa may have been in the house of john prince of newburyport, massachusetts, when washington and lafayette were guests there. The antique sofa was featured in the girl scouts loan exhibition sponsored by the american art galleries, ny in 1929. This was a milestone event because it was the first extensive public display of early american decorative arts. The pieces exhibited were selected by many of the most prominent curators of the day and their selections influenced scholars and interior designers for years to come. less
