This beautiful Meiji period plaque has Japanese calligraphy as well as chrysanthemums and a mother bird with her baby, nesting amongst the foliage. Chrysanthemums symbolize royalty, longevity and rejuvenation, as well as the Imperial Family emblem. I was told this is a writer's desk ornament that was contemplated in an effort to find solace or inspiration to continue writing. The silver panel is bolted to the dark wooden plaque which has the original bolt and screw, as well as a kickstand for display. The dark wood plaque is hand wrought and even has saw marks. There are no hallmarks. Measurements for this fabulous creation are: Wooden plaque Height from top to bottom=7 inches, Width from side to side at widest=9 inches, Depth from front to back=5/8 inches. Silver plaque Height from top to bottom=5 inches, Width from side to side at widest=6-1/2 inches, Depth=1/8 inch. This marvelous Japanese Meiji Period desk plaque has been well cared for, gently used and is in excellent antique condition. Please note that there is copper showing through the silver plating, but it does not impact the beauty or usability of this beautiful piece. In addition, the wood plaque has a very small loss on the bottom resting point. It is the perfect gift for a writer or if you enjoy art from the Japanese Meiji period. See less
