This is just a great original piece. It is one of two original seymour remenick pastels I acquired fresh from a maine estate. I have had only one other remenick paintings in the past and it was just a study. Nothing as good as this one and the other I am offering. For those not familiar with rememick I have included his biography below. I believe this is a view of the buildings of philadelphia. It is similar to another work with that title I have seen by remenick. Pastel on paper measuring 6 x 9 1/4 inches. Signed lower center. Pastel is in excellent condition with original color and composition. Simple clean matte shows some minor rippling. Original gold frame is complimentary and ready to hang. Frame measures 12 x 15 inches.
For those not familiar with the artist his biography from askart reads:"A Philadelphia oil painter, Seymour Remenick has painted in styles embodying both abstraction and realism, and it is said that his career is a "quietly stubborn revolt against the prevailing trends of his student days" and that "he has proven that a quiet voice can be heard in a vociferous age." From 1977 to 1996, he was a teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy. His primary subject is landscape, but he also paints still lifes, figures, and portraits. He began his career as a follower of Hans Hoffman, Abstract Expressionist. However, he realized that the supposed freedom of that style was also very confining, because it was prescribed by the art establishment that resisted rebellion against it. He felt that the proponents had denied themselves much of the rich material of the real world in their devotion to mood, colors, and shapes.
Remenick enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy for more traditional painting, and his admiration turned to other artists, many of them Old Masters, including Rembrandt, Velasquez, Bruegel, Corot, Turner, and Eakins. His subjects include city scenes of Philadelphia and its suburbs, mills along Schuykill River, as well as New England coastal and town scenes including New Bedford and Gloucester. He has much tangible evidence of his success as a painter including the Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant in 1955, the Benjamin Altman Landscape Prize from the National Academy of Design in 1960, and a Hallmark Purchase Prize in 1960. Reminick died in December, 1999."
