Original peter s marshall 'provincetown cottage #2' white line woodcut
this is just a great original piece. I have been buying more and more woodcuts every time I see them. And I get especially excited about them when they are original white line woodcuts. This one is really an outstanding example of the contemporary woodcuts being done in provincetown. According to the note on the back, this is actually one of the first marshall did in his series of white line woodcuts. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is a wonderful view of a cottage in provincetown. Image measures 8 x 4 3/4 inches. Signed and titled in pencil below the image. Archival matte and gold frame measure 16 x 11 1/2. Really a beautiful print and presentation. Frame measures 15 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches.
For those not familair with the artist his biography from askart reads: "Peter Marshall has graduated from Hamilton College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and from Boston University with a Masters in Sculpture. He’s been vacationing in Provincetown since the mid 1970s, made a home here in 2000, and has shown his art in a number of local galleries, including Icon, Matrix Gallery, and the Ron Fowler Gallery. He has also shown at the Leslie Lohman Gallery in New York City, Gingerbread Square Gallery in Key West and 281 Gallery in Boston. He has also been in both open and juried shows at PAAM. One of the reasons why he started doing white line prints was because he was intrigued by their Provincetown history, and liked the idea of helping to carry on the artistic tradition of a local printing technique. He’s tried to capture Provincetown’s past in both current activities and landscapes without sentimentalizing them. He enjoys using the muted palette similar to that of some of the earliest white line artists, but also likes changing the boundaries for a varied point of view. The longer he lives in Provincetown, the more he plans to depict the timeless activities of the town. "
