this is a wonderful original painting. I recently acquired a small collection paintings by john loughlin directly from the artist's estate. I also have a couple watercolors for sale by the artist that I have had in my inventory for a while. A great chance to pick up some incredible works by the artist. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This might be one of the artist's finest works! Oil on canvas measuring 30 x 29 inches. Signed lower right. For those not familiar with the artist his biography from askart reads: "John Leo Loughlin - artist, teacher, lecturer, and illustrator - was born on April 11, 1931 in Worcester, MA and died on May 23, 2004 while residing in Lincoln, RI. Highly proficient in both oil and watercolor painting, and known for his fine drawing skills, he once said his preferred medium was watercolor. Well known for his New England scenes, Loughlin spent many hours painting outdoors with fellow artists and good friends Bernard Corey, who passed away in 2000, and Michael Graves. After serving in the Korean War, Loughlin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a General Excellence Award from the Worcester Art Museum School in 1957 and, in 1964, a Master of Education degree from Clark University in Worcester, MA. In the 1996 edition of the Artists of the Rockport Art Association, Loughlin said he had the good fortune to study with Eliot O'Hara, NA (1890-1969) and Edgar Whitney, ANA (1891-?). The first job he held was as an illustrator and cartographer with the National Geographic Society from 1958 to 1959. Later, from 1961 to 1968, he worked as an illustrator and department head with the United States Naval War College in Newport, RI. Loughlin's last position before becoming a full-time painter was as an art director at WSBE-TV in Providence, RI in 1968. At the same time he was teaching privately and with Providence College from 1970 to 1972. Some of the publications with Loughlin's illustrations include the National Geographic Society magazine, 1958; the Massachusetts Wildlife magazine, 1959; the Salt Water Sportsman magazine, 1959; the Naval Review; and the New England School Development Council Publication, 1967.

Loughlin was an active artist member of the American Watercolor Society in New York City; the Providence Art Club in RI; past president of the Providence Watercolor Club, now the Rhode Island Watercolor Society; the Guild of Boston Artists; the Rockport Art Association (RAA); the North Shore Art Association; the Allied Artists in New York City; the Academic Artists; the New England Watercolor Society; and the Hudson Valley Art Association. He exhibited with at the Boston Arts Festival in 1955; the Academic Artists Show in Springfield, MA in 1959; the Bristol Art Museum in RI in 1970; the American Watercolor Society held at the National Academy of Design Gallery in NYC in 1971; the Providence Art Club Open Watercolor Show in 1972; and The Galleries, Wellesley Hills, MA in the 1970s.

Awards earned by Loughlin include the W. Alden Brown Memorial Award from the Providence Watercolor Club in 1969; the C. Gordon Harris Award in 1971; the Dr. Edwin Dunlop Award in 1972; a Medal of Honor in Oils from the Academic Artists in 1986; the Hatfield Color Shop Award from the RAA in 1987; the Lindley Dean Award from the RAA in 1987; the Winsor & Newton Award from the Rhode Island Watercolor Society in 1987; the Academic Artist Association Council Award in 1988; the Antonio Cirino Award in Any Medium from the RAA in 1988; the Jane Everett Swift Award from the RAA in 1989; March Group Award Exhibition Award from the RAA in 1989; the Florence Kane Award for Painting in March of 1989; the Rose McClinchey Award for Watercolor from the North Shore Art Association in 1989; the Stow Wengenroth Award for Drawing from the RAA in 1989; the Eleanor Callow Award in Watercolor fro the RAA in 1989; the Orvis Sporting Award of $1000 from the Southern Vermont Art Association (RAA) in 1989; the Silver Medal from the New England Watercolor Society in 1990; the President's Medal Award with a solo exhibition from the Kent Art Association, Ct for "Yellowstone, Autumn" in 2003; the Bernard Corey Memorial Award from the RAA; and the Charles O. Davies Silver Medal from the RAA.
