A nice pair of French 1925-1930 art deco wall lights in nickel plated solid brass or bronze holding two beautiful panels in frosted molded-pressed glass. The shades were acid frosted and then polished by hand to create glossy highlights. This model shade is never signed like many other models of the large glass factory of Etablissements Jean Gauthier. The mounts are vaguely marked CJ on the inside. The foundry initials of Célestin Jamain a producer and seller of art deco lighting during the interbellum in Paris (17-19 rue Gambey).

The sconces are 26,1 cm (10.28") wide and 25,4 cm (10") high. They project 13,5 cm (5,31") from the wall. Both are in excellent condition. They have the usual small chips on the rim. All hidden by the bronze mountings. I have re-nickeled and patinated the mounts. The wall lamps come rewired. I placed American candelabra base sockets.

Jean Gauthier had his workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J. Robert pseudonym for J. Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
