Subject seascape marine portrait of the British 3 masted Barquentine sailing ship Charles James rigged in full sail portrayed in side profile sailing along facing towards the left side in rough choppy seas off the coast of Dunkirk France. With sailor figures on deck and the name of the vessel showing by the bow. The British Union Jack flag and 6 other ensign flags can be seen hoisted on the stern, middle & bow masts. With mainly clear blue sky showing overhead. A black buoy which has the number 7 on it can see in the lower foreground. To the far right towards the bow of the ship you can view a steamship in the distance, on the other flank are shoreline views showing the entrance to the port of Dunkirk in France.

A barquentine or schooner barque (alternatively "barkentine" or "schooner bark") is a sailing vesselwith three or more masts; with a square rigged foremast and fore-and-aft rigged main, mizzen and any other masts.
While a full-rigged ship is square-rigged on all three masts, and the barque is square-rigged except for the mizzen-mast, the barquentine extends the principle by making only the foremast square-rigged. The advantages of a smaller crew, good performance before the wind and the ability to sail relatively close to the wind while carrying plenty of cargo made it a popular rig at the end of the nineteenth century.
