Hand knotted in wool, this 6x8 Baluch rug represents a new line of tribal carpets in the Modern Classics Collection by Rug & Kilim. Each piece represents the work of women weavers in Afghanistan, preserving the rich tradition of their centuries-old craft.
On the Design:
This piece bears a resemblance to the “Kohistani” design—a Persian term meaning “from the mountainous land” in nomadic carpets. The sharp patterns in brown, blue, red and green are accompanied by hints of salmon in a rich, yet playful look. Keen eyes will further admire the sense of movement the color variations lend the geometric motifs throughout the field. It’s one of the countless personal details that distinguish this tradition as a fabulous form of folk art today. This work is a comfortable, yet so exciting piece of primitivist, old-world charm and rustic beauty from its collection.
