A gorgeous pair of elm wood and brass inlay Korean Tansu butterfly chests or nightstands that are dramatic yet are easily mixed with other periods and styles. The patina on these antique Asian chests are reflected in the deep shade of the lacquered elm wood and their beautifully detailed brass fittings that adorn the two small drawers at the top centered with butterfly shaped handles; their double doors showcasing a traditional circular brass enclosure that open to a large space divided by a single shelf; all its corners and feet; as well as the top of each piece that include a brass detail bordering each corner with an Asian symbol accenting the middle.
Tansu chests originated during the Edo period around 1603 in Japan. Highly versatile, tansu cabinets can be used anywhere in today's homes, whether or not they currently include pieces of Korean or Japanese furniture. Small tansu such as these chests can be used as occasional or bedside tables, larger ones as a chest, dresser, sideboard or low storage furniture. These Korean tansu butterfly chests are great collectible pieces for many decor styles, including traditional, grand millennial, chinoiserie, maximalist, or eclectic.
Each measuring 24 1/2" l x 18" d x 21 1/2" h, these antique tansu chests are in great condition with patina that is consistent with their age and history.
