19th century southern and eastern African war clubs known as a Knobkerrie's. They are hand carved from the wood of a root ball or wad and carried by Zulu warriors in South Africa as well as the Maasai Male Warriors from Eastern Africa. Made from the hard wood of a ironwood tree and carved from just one limb, these clubs or Knobkerrie as they're also called formed an important part of the Zulu warrior’s arsenal and given the weight and hardness of the head, could inflict very serious wounds.
The word Knobkerrie derives from the Dutch knop (knob or button), and the Bushman kerrie or kirri (stick). The weapon is employed at close quarters, or thrown as a missile and in time of peace may also serve as a walking-stick. The name has been extended to similar weapons used by the natives of Australia, the Pacific islands and other places.
Also known a rungu (Swahili) and is a wooden throwing club or baton bearing special symbolism and significance in East African tribal cultures and is used for hunting and the chase.
Sold here as a set of 3 and can be acquired individually as well, please inquire.
The clubs are wrapped in thin metal wire and some have colors mixed in. They have been professionally mounted on thin lucite blocks for best display. less
