Dorothy Gillespie, born in Roanoke, VA in 1920, enjoyed a remarkable artistic career that spanned over 70 years until her passing in 2012 at the age of 92. She received her education at the Maryland Institute College of Art before moving to New York City in 1943, where she continued her studies at the renowned Art Students League of New York and Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17.
Gillespie played a significant role in the women's art movement, contributing to the advancement of women artists during the feminist art movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Renowned for her vibrant and joyful sculptural art, she constantly pushed boundaries and explored new materials and techniques. Gillespie's mastery extended across various mediums, including painting, paper, sculpture, printmaking, environment and happenings, ceramics, jewelry, and set designs.
As a painter, sculptor, and installation artist, Gillespie's work encompassed several prominent 20th-century art movements, such as abstract expressionism, decorative abstraction, site-specific installations, the women's movement, and art in public spaces.
Education held immense importance to Dorothy Gillespie throughout her life. She passionately shared her knowledge, delivering public lectures and coaching and teaching young artists at over 50 colleges and universities. Gillespie held the esteemed position of Distinguished Professor of Art at Radford University and served as a Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellow for many years. In 1990, her commitment to education was recognized when she received a Doctor of Pedagogy from Niagara University.
