American Brilliant Period (ABP) Cut Crystal Set of 7.
American Brilliant Period ranged approximately from 1876 to WW1. America known as the finest cut glass in the world winning many awards.
Champagne Pitcher-Double punty handle with x cuts. 3 large 16 point hobstars on each side with fluted spout that is notched on miters.
The 6 all-matching tumblers are complementary in pattern with the pitcher. The hobstar center pyramid harmonizes with the hobstars on the pitcher both outline in a triangular point and the diamond cross hatching.
12” tall x 5.5” wide at base and 6.5” wide to handle
Tumblers 3 7/8” tall x 3” wide
Excellent blank with no chips or cracks. There may be a nick which would be not uncommon, but I haven’t found one. Exceptionally clean set. A tiny bubble found. It is blown glass. The bottom has some minor surface wear (scratches).
The tumblers don’t even show surface wear. Excellent condition.
American Brilliant Period ranged approximately from 1876 to WW1. Hand blown into iron molds ‘a blank’ and then hand cut by artisans over numerous labor intensive hours. Imagine working near a 2400 degree furnace in the early 1900’s! These artisans initially came over from Europe during that time in history and often apprenticed for 8 years.
Excerpts from www.cutglass.org which provides excellent historical background to today.
‘Cut Glass’ is crystal that has been decorated entirely by hand by use of rotating wheels. Cuts are made in an otherwise completely smooth surface of the glass by artisans holding and moving the piece against various sized metal or stone wheels.
American companies showed their beautiful home decor and furnishings at our nations 100th birthday at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Stunning new patterns stood out against earlier European designs .Cutting shops proliferated to meet the demand for fine pieces of cut glass being sought by wealthy American households, Presidents and dignitaries worldwide.
Libbey and Hawkes are two significant companies forming the American Brilliant Cut Glass Period.
