The Davenport desk got its name from Captain Josiah Davenport who originally commissioned its design in the late 18th century. Also sometimes referred to as a "ship captain's" desk, the style gained in popularity in the following century throughout much of Europe. During the Victorian era, its distinctive style and in particular its diminutive size made the desk an attractive piece for the lady of the house.
This desk features simple but classic design elements of the original Davenport desk - a leather (green) writing surface on a hinged, inclined top that lifts to reveal a storage area for paper and pens, and four drawers on either side of the desk. The desk sits atop casters, as was common for Victorian era pieces.
While we can't definitively confirm the provenance of this piece, however our suspicion is that it was a classic "bench made" item, skillfully handcrafted by a individual for personal use. It is crafted in the "petite" Davenport desk style, but our best guess is that it dates to the early 20th Century, so not technically from the Victoria era. That said, it is a beautiful, well-constructed desk with classic design elements and a lovely patina. It would be ideal for someone with limited space who is looking for a memorable and eye-catching piece.
