This Really is a Great Looking and Quite Unusual Large Size Antique Hinged Covered Utility Basket. Circa Approx. 1850. It is Completely and Substantially Hand Made - Hand Woven out of Wide Shaved Pine Wood Splints with a Doubled Steam Bent Carry Handle. It also has a Steam Bent Top Rim with Numerous Early Hand Made Steel Nail Fasteners. The Removable Lid has Hand Made Steel Hinges and a Partially Intact Steel Hasp Plate. It is Done in the Classic Picnic Basket Style and Surely Would have Been Used to Carry Food Items. It was Made and Designed to be Durable for Everyday Utilitarian Use. It Still Retains its Original Dark Greenish Blue Painted Exterior with Hand Painted - Lettered Original Owners Information that Reads " H. L. JUNG SOUTH MANCHESTER CONN. NORTH AMERIKA" - ( Connecticut - America ). Based on my Many years of Experience in the Antique Business and Additional Research I can Say with Confidence that it was Made and Used by One of the Many Early American German Immigrants During the Early to Mid 19th Century. NOTE That the American Last Name "Young" is Derived from the German Spelling "Jung". It is in Very Nice Overall Original As Has Survived Over the Years Condition. The Paint has Developed a Wonderful Color with Naturally Aged Patina Over the Years that Cannot be Duplicated and it Displays Beautifully. It is Strong - Sound & Perfectly Usable.
