Set of 16 framed herbariums from 1902. Framed in matte white Larson-Juhl solid wood from Italy. Folios are mounted to archival quality board under non-glare plexiglass, matching descriptive quill dipped analyses and drawings pasted to backs.
Collections of dried plants carefully pressed between two folio sheets called a herbarium, or dry garden, was first attributed to 16th century Italy for the purpose of scientific study. During Europe's age of exploration, individuals would travel overseas bringing back new species and contributing to the scientific community. Wealthy men heralded large collections as a sign of wealth and knowledge. The art of taxonomy became popular amidst young botanists and connosieursThis particular collection was created in the spring of 1902 by highschool age girl, Emma Hackett, of Akron, Ohio.
