Edwin Walter is best know for his large fused and hot glass window panels and glass mosaic pictures/scenes. Like most artists, he had to make smaller items to afford his passion of art glass. Mr. Walter's art glass has been on exhibit in numerous museums and galleries through out the South. Mr. Walter's sister-in-law, Vel Walter, owns 30 pieces of his work, and after trying to pick her favorite, concedes: "There's too much to choose from." Numerous glass works displayed in cities across the Midwest and South, including Columbia, are part of the legacy of Edwin D. Walter, a Columbia native who died Feb. 5, 2001 at his home in Troy, Alabama. He was 82. Mr. Walter grew up in Columbia and taught art at Hickman High School and MU before teaching at several other universities, including Troy State, where he taught for the last 39 years. As an Air Force pilot, Mr. Walter flew over 30 missions as a B-17 bomber pilot in WWII. He was a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society, and a member of the 486 bomb association. Mr. Walter is most widely known for his art, which is especially popular in the South. He won many awards for his work, including being named Alabama Master Craftsman. His work is on display in Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. Several of his pieces are also housed at the Columbia Art League.
Here is offered TWO fern-themed plates by the master glass artist Edwin D. Walter. The larger one is round with a diameter of 10 3/4". If you look closely, you'll see the leaves of many of the ferns are formed with controlled bubbles! This plate rests on three shallow, subtle toes. The smaller one is 8-sided with a diameter (flat side to flat side, not point to point) of 8". Again, there are controlled bubbles within the leaves of some of the ferns. Both are signed.
No chips, cracks, or unusual wear to either one. Absolutely lovely.
If you are a collector of Edwin Walter pieces, or you just want to add some nature-themed art glass pieces to accent a space, these are meant for you. less
