The stage curtains are in original fabric.

The history of Guignol is closely linked to that of Lyon and one man, Laurent Mourguet. The first trace of the puppet dates back to around 1810.

Some say its creator, Laurent Mourguet, was inspired by his own image.
Others claim that he borrowed a Canut neighbor's expression "C'est guignolant" for his shows, and that audiences named the puppet Guignol.

Another hypothesis is that his name derives from the name of a Lombard village, Chignolo.
Although his origin is a matter of debate, Guignol is a true Lyonnais, embodying humor, independence and joie de vivre. less
