Signed lower right J. Büche
Josef Büche (Vienna 1848 - Merano 1917) was a prominent Austrian artist. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Eduard von Engerth and Carl Wurzinger, where he received an overall study award.
Büche portrayed many members of the Austrian imperial family and other distinguished personalities.
From 1881 to 1901 he worked in Innsbruck, Tyrol. In 1883 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, The Association of Austrian Artists.
Büche participated in the illustrations of the "Astro-Hungarian Monarchy in Words and Pictures", a 24-volume encyclopedia of regional studies, initiated in 1883 by Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary.
The painting is presented in giltwood frame, possibly from the period
