An exquisitely painted watercolor and gouache portrait
A beautiful young lady in early 19th century attire
It represents a rendition of the famous oil painting on canvas, done by the celebrated English artist John Lindsey Lucas (1807-1874), portraying Lady Blanche Howard, Countess of Burlington, Duchess of Devonshire (1812-1840). Devonshire Catalogue, 1933, No.407
A full-length portrait, facing, in a lush Romantic landscape. Lady Blanche is wearing a white gown, gloves held in her left hand, the right hand resting on a Neo-Classical pedestal.
The original portrait was completed posthumously, between 1841-1842. The young lady is depicted in the dress worn at the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (1840). Since 1838 Lady Blanche Howard was Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria, an official position of personal attendant to the British queen regnant.
John Lindsey Lucas (1807-1874), a well known London artist, first studied mezzotint engraving under S.W. Reynolds and at the close of his apprenticeship set up as a portrait painter, establishing an enormously successful practice. He was a member of the Clipstone Street Academy. His sitters included the Prince Consort, who sat for him four times, the Princess Royal, the Duke of Wellington, who sat for him eight times, among many other royalty and nobility members.
