The head is turned to the young man's left and David appears to be looking intently at a distant point. the facial expression is intense and shows extreme concentration. Young David is depicted in the act of observing the giant warrior Goliath before facing him. David's appearance is that of a classical hero and as such he is sculpted naked and muscular. David with his proud attitude soon became the symbol of Florence. In fact, the heroic behavior of the protagonist represented well the intention of the Florentine people to fight against all tyranny.
