Dynamic mid century seascape capturing the moment a wave crashes upon the rocks at Emerald Bay, Laguna Beach, California by listed artist Mildred Ruth Finch Brown (American, 1891-1969), c.1955. Signed lower right: "Margaret Finch Brown." Titled in pencil on verso: "Wind and Wave" and stamped on the stretcher bar: "Original Oil Painting by Mildred Finch Brown, Laguna Beach, Calif." Presented in a rustic, carved wood frame with linen liner. Image, 20"H x 30"W.
Mildred Ruth Finch Brown was born on October 24, 1891. She wed Leroy Brown in 1925. She began painting as a hobby in 1948. She was largely self- taught but studied with Bennett Bradbury, Ralph Love, Robert Wood, Leon Franks and Sergei Bongart. She was a retired teacher of Biological Sciences, the dean of women at Fairfax High School for many years, and was an administrator in the Los Angeles Schools for 30 years.
She was a member of the Valley Artist Guild, California Art Club, American Institute of Fine Arts, and the Laguna Beach Art Association. Her paintings received awards in competitions at the Valley Artist Guild, Bullock’s, California Club, Los Angeles Tennis Club and the Motorola Company. She had many one-man shows and each year exhibited at the Festival of Arts. Mrs. Brown was on the Board of Directors of the Laguna Beach Art Association for four years. Miss Brown was invited to show with the Laguna Beach Art Association at the Laguna Art Festival in 1960. Her painting subjects were inspired by the landscape around Laguna and her world travels. She has paintings in countries she visited including: Canada, Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. Most of her later life was spent in Laguna Beach at Emerald Bay. She died there on Jan. 31, 1969. less
