A RARE and impressive originally hand colored engraving, aka aquatint
A historic topographical image of Aberdeen, northeast Scotland
Depicts a panoramic view, taken from the South bank of Dee, looking across the river towards the town
This engraving is perhaps an immediate forerunner of John Clark's own "Views in Scotland", published in London between 1824 and 1825 with a total of 35 plates
Under the image is printed the title: Aberdeen from The South; at the left corner Geo Smith del, at the right - J. Clark sculpt
The engraving is masterly rendered by John Clark after the work of George Smith
George Smith (British, 1713/14-1776) was an English landscape painter and poet, known as "George Smith of Chichester". He and his two brothers, all artists, are known as the "Smiths of Chichester", their birthplace in Sussex. George Smith depicted the rural and pastoral scenery of England in a pleasing but idealistic manner, based on the study of Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. He was through his life a much admired artist. His reputation extended to the continent, where he was apparently known as the "British Gessner"
John Heaviside Clark (c.1771-1863) was a Scottish aquatint engraver and painter of seascapes and landscapes. He was also known as Waterloo Clark, because of the sketches he made on the field directly after the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815
Most likely published by Smith & Elder, London 1822
