A studio and clay-working school named Winfield Pottery was founded in Pasadena, California in 1929. The founder, Lesley Winfield Sample, died in 1939 and the pottery was taken over by Margaret M. Gabriel and her husband. Margaret had designed the hand-painted Bamboo pattern in 1937. Winfield Pottery moved to Santa Monica in 1946 and in that same year, the American Ceramic Products Co., also located in Santa Monica, bought the rights to manufacture some of the Winfield patterns. American Ceramic Products became Winfield China Co. in 1959 but was out of business by 1969. The pattern you see in the photos is Passion Flower, one of four of the most popular patterns Winfield Pottery produced (the other three were Bamboo, Desert Dawn and Dragon Flower). In days gone by, ashtrays were used as home decor focal points and were works of art, meant to be seen and admired. This whimsical set was given to me as a gift, not so much to be used as ashtrays but as spoon and teabag trays. The size of each tray is perfect for a teabag and as a spoon rest. These cuties are crafted from glazed over earthenware with a hand painted melodic motif that consists of whimsical brown leaves and stems on a creamy white background. Smaller pieces in this pattern just have the leaves, whereas the pattern on larger pieces has pink flowers and brown leaves. Each measures 3¾” x 3” x ½” W/D/H; together the set weighs 1 lb. 4 oz. In excellent condition with two glaze pops that occurred during firing (when air bubbles reached the surface of the glaze and burst--see photos 7 & 8) which does not affect their beauty or utility. It’s a gorgeous, minimalist pattern with pleasing soothing colors that will play well with most any neutral décor scheme in your home.
