Reference:
Mary M. Arding was a British ceramic artist who worked at Doulton's Lambeth pottery from 1878 to 1883. She was one of a small number of women who were employed as decorators at the pottery during this period. Arding's work is characterized by its delicate floral designs, which were often painted in shades of blue, green, and yellow. Her work is highly sought-after by collectors of Aesthetic Movement pottery.
Arding was born in Lambeth, London, in 1855. She began her career as a ceramic decorator at Minton's Art Pottery studio in 1875. In 1878, she moved to Doulton's Lambeth pottery, where she worked for five years. During her time at Doulton, Arding produced a wide range of decorated wares, including vases, bowls, and plates. Her work was often inspired by the natural world, and she frequently depicted flowers, leaves, and birds in her designs.
Arding's work was well-received by critics and collectors alike. In 1883, she was awarded a silver medal at the International Exhibition in London. She continued to work as a ceramic decorator until her retirement in 1920. Arding died in 1934 at the age of 78.
