Vibrant hues of red and pink against a rich dark predominantly green, brown backdrop. Highly skilled artistry using light and color. Background shows depth and highlights by use of shading drawing your eye around the painting. Foreground is lighter give focal center and a vase for subject.

Cox is renowned for his use of palette knife and this is an excellent example of his mature work. Look at the use of the palette knife on the bottom right flower laying outside of the basket. He uses the background as part of the tones of petal and leaf. The flower above that positioned sideways-the way he was able to create movement and whispy flow of the petals with a palette knife. The more I look the more I like! Beautiful!

This floral still life showcases a wood basket subtly almost blended with the background so it does not detract from the main focus of the flowers. The weave attracts the eye providing another layer of interest and professional skill. This basket is a wonderful variation from the many ceramic vases in his still life work.

Please note where he placed his signature. It’s aligned with the basket versus way out right or left which can be distracting to your eye and does not pull away from the subject. Lovely and well done.

Robert Cox (1934-2001)

American artist Robert Cox studied at the Katharine Gibbs School of Art. He was a founder member of the Art Workers Coalition active in promoting the rights of artists. Awarded the Brown Hammerson Medal of Honour for services to art in 1986. Robert Cox established reputation in the United States for his neo-Victorian style and his early adoption of the pallet knife in creating stylized flowers. His work is represented in many American museums, galleries and private collections as well as having been frequently exported to Europe and Australia and has been auctioned at Christies, Bonhams and Cheffins less
