This antique piece is a lovely example of Limoges in the late 19th century: a hand painted clover shaped pin tray signed by renowned artist Samuel Sherratt. Sweetly detailed blue Forget Me Nots on a pale green background that gently changes to blue sky at the top with gold guild around the edges. This Victorian era piece is over 120 years old and has been well cared for by each new steward.
The porcelain piece was manufactured by A. Klingenberg & Dwenger, Limoges France (AKD).
A. Klingenberg was an accomplished Limoges artisan painter when he opened his own porcelain factory and decorating studio in the Limoges region of France in the early 1880's. He merged with Charles Dwenger's studio in the late 1890's to early 1900's. Klingenberg & Dwenger together manufactured fine porcelain products and beautifully decorated pieces until 1910 when the company closed its doors.
Artist, Samuel Sherratt
Born in Staffordshire England, he became a well-known and sought-after artist hand painting Limoges and Bavarian pieces of porcelain. In 1879 he moved to the United States and opened his own studio in Washington DC in 1890. There he would decorate blank Whiteware for many fine European porcelain houses including Limoges, Thomas Bavaria and Rosenthal Donatello, and others. It is believed that pieces signed "Sherratt’s" were ones painted in his studio until his death in 1903. less
