An early iteration of the Staffordshire flatback cow creamer produced sometime after 1838. Press molded and hand-painted this large-scale bovine is over 10" in width and 9" in height.
The Victorian middle class was eager to emulate their betters in the 1840-1850s by decorating their homes with objects similar to costly Meissen and Chelsea figures. Staffordshire potters obliged by turning out painted and glazed pottery sheep dogs, cattle and more exotic animals such as this zebra, which is highly prized by collectors.
There appears to be some enamel wear on the neck area but this could also be a design element. View pictures carefully.
Measures 10.5" (26.5cm) in width, 9.5" (24cm) in height and 2 .5" (6.5cm) in depth
