Work signed lower right and inscribed "P.A." bottom left (pencil on sheet). Mark George Tobey was an American painter of abstract art. He began his career between Chicago and New York as a fashion designer. In these years he approaches the Bahá'í religious community and will remain fascinated by oriental cults for the rest of his life. His deep love for oriental culture will always influence his art and in 1934 will push him to travel between China and Japan where he will learn the calligraphic art that will participate in his works through the creation of White Writing (white writing). In 1928 he founded the Free and Creative School. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
