An original hand tinted engraving and etching made by Jean-Baptiste Blaise Simonet (1742-1817) after the painting of Pierre-Antoine Baudouin (1723-1769)
It depict a charming courting scene from the comic opera "Rose et Colas" (Rose and Colas) by Pierre-Alexandre Monsigny (music) and Michel-Jean Sedaine (book), 1764, scene XII
Rose, a young girl, did not want to continue her relationship with Colas, because her father and his have had a disagreement
In this picture the young man (Colas) attaches his bouquet to the spindle used by Rose, as Rose reveals herself from her hiding place
The French text at the banner under the image reads: "Grave' d'apres le Tableau par J.A. Badouin / Original Peint a gouache appartenant a M. Prault" ("Engraving after the Painting by P. A. Baudouin / Original Painted in gouache, belonging to M. Prault")
Lettering at the lower left: Boudouin pinx, at the right: Simonet sculp.
Baudouin, Pierre-Antoine (1723-1769) was a French painter working in the style of his father-in-law, François Boucher. He was elected an Academician (member of French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture) in 1763, as a miniature painter. Baudouin executed idyllic and romantic subjects in watercolors and crayons, but rarely painted in oil.
Jean-Baptiste Blaise Simonet (1742-1817) was a French engraver and illustrator, author of numerous vignettes. His works are among the collections of major art institutions, such a The Metropolitan Museum, and The Art Institute of Chicago, among others
An etching like the presented here is part of the Widener Collection of The National Gallery of Art, acc. # 1942.9.2140, and there is another at The Art Institute of Chicago, # 1926.998
