Created in Jiangsu, China around 1850, this arch-shaped panel was originally part of a traditional four-post marriage bed crafted from beech wood. Adorned with intricate geometric patterns and carvings, it was salvaged as a single piece and can now serve as an unusual headboard, frame a television, or simply make a stunning wall display.
The upper part of the panel consists of intersecting patterns created by joining, mitring and fitting together individual pieces of wood. These are complemented with intricate carved floral motifs, and at the top, four finely detailed, robed figures are displayed. At the base of each side of the panel lies a larger circular carving, depicting figures from Chinese legends or popular stories in a deep relief. These carvings are further supported by a carved 'foo dog' – mythical lions that ward off evil.
The contrast between light frames and deeper carvings provides a straightforward, organic aesthetic that can fit with various decor styles, making this panel a true focal point anywhere it is placed. less
