Rare find. Invitation to the opening party for Alexander Calder's major retrospective ("Calder"), held at the Fondation Maeght, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France, at 7:00 PM on April 2, 1969. The exhibition closed on May 31, 1969. Lithograph on card stock, single fold. Measures 14.25 x 4.75 inches unfolded.
Excellent condition. Negligible age-related toning; paper is uniformly cream in color and clean. Some paper handling marks; these are most visible in the images of the text side / interior.
The last photo was taken at the opening event, and shows Calder with Joan Miro in the garden of the Fondation Maeght (photo by Ugo Mulas).
Purchased from the estate of Naomi Caryl Hirshhorn (1931 - 2022). Caryl was a longtime art collector and patron in Los Angeles. She was the daughter of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, whose modern art collection established the Hirshhorn Museum as a part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Hirshhorn's collection was particularly noted for its 19th and 20th century sculpture by Calder, Brancusi, Rodin, Giacometti, and others.
