Ferrigno’s work has emerged from a curiosity about the natural world. This desire to understand the workings of nature led her to study geometry and systems informed by the natural physical science. In the studio, these systems serve a trellis to engage the spiritual and emotional dimensions of being. In Ferrigno’s studio practice, the freedom to continually search, question, and push into new territory is of the utmost importance. Recent work has been an obsessive investigation of color and architectonic forms. Her color is informed by memories of specific forms and spaces, particularly the lush landscapes and weather of the Midwest. Through color, she hopes to tap into the emotions of the viewer. Ferrigno’s forms are discovered through the processes of making and are increasingly flirting with figuration. She desires the forms to stay open as she is interested in what the viewer brings to the work. She hopes the final imagery moves the viewer towards an active contemplative state.
Andrea Ferrigno was born in Des Moines, Iowa. She received her BFA from Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from the University of Iowa. Ferrigno has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. She was recently included in exhibitions at The Painting Center, Blue Mountain Gallery and Gallery 104 in NYC. She has been an artist fellow at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts (VCCA), and also been granted residency a DRAWinternational in Caylus, France and at The Vermont Studio Center. Ferrigno is currently Assistant Professor of Fine Art at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where she lives and works. This summer she is looking forward to living and working in Paris, France less
