"Flower in the Glass" is a beautiful and delicate floral image by Tomoi Yokoi, published by HMK Fine Arts c. 1973 in an edition of 75 plus artist proofs. The image is 14.75" x 7.5" on 18" x 22" paper. It is a mezzotint, in which the artist first uses a tool called a "rocker" to work over an etching plate so that the entire surface is roughened to create a black background when printed. Then the image is created by polishing it back from dark to light. The print is framed in an antique silver leaf frame with black sides, with a deep bevel 100% rag mat, and plexiglass. It is pencil signed and numbered by the artist below the image. Framed Size: 29" h x 24.75" wide.
Yokoi studied art in Tokyo and later in Paris at Hayter's Atelier 17, the most prestigious school of intaglio printing. She settled in New York in 1971, having perfected the difficult and arduous technique of colour mezzotint printing. She combines European beaux-art subject matter with an oriental emphasis on asymmetry and design, producing subtly nuanced prints, many of which are in major international museums.
Yokoi's work is in prestigious permanent collections including the Musée d' Art Moderne, Paris; the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; Brooklyn Museum, New York; and the Free Library of Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania. She has exhibited throughout Europe and the United States including: Norwegian International Print Biennial, Oslo; Paris International Print Biennial; SAGA National Print Exhibition, New York; IKI International Art Fair, Dusseldorf; British International Print Biennial, Bradford; and Ljubljana International Print Biennial, Yugoslavia. less
